Plan for monument layout in a letter to Stanford White,
collection of Darmouth College

The collaboration between Saint-Gaudens and Stanford White on the Farragut Monument brought about a significant change from earlier monumental sculpture produced in this country. The careful attention given to siting, landscaping, and architectural features of the monument, including the benches, pedestals, and inscriptions, formed an organized and integrated whole.
