| On June 6, 1944, the Studio of the Caryatids burned to the ground. The fire destroyed most of the monumental plasters, as well as many smaller works and memorabilia. Rather than rebuild the studio, the Memorial trustees commissioned architect John Ames to renovate existing outbuildings into a new gallery complex, which opened to the public on the centennial of Saint-Gaudens' birth in 1948. |
