Fanny Smith Whittlesey, 1870 Fanny Smith Whittlesey (1861-1942) was nine years old when this pencil portrait was made. Her mother, Elmira C. C. Whittlesey (Mrs. Elisha W.), was visiting Paris with her family and was instrumental in obtaining cameo commissions for the young sculptor. During his brief return to the United States in 1872-1873, Saint-Gaudens taught drawing to the Whittlesey children. |
