William M. Evarts, 1872-74 William Maxwell Evarts (1818-1901) was a distinguished lawyer and statesman. He was a United States senator from New York, Secretary of State, and United States attorney general. Introduced to Saint-Gaudens by Montgomery Gibbs, Evarts was influential in obtaining commissions for the sculptor from friends and colleagues. He was also the father-in-law of Charles Beaman, the man who brought Saint-Gaudens to Cornish, New Hampshire.
