Frederick MacMonnies, Columbian Fountain detail, "The Barge of State," historic photograph by C.D. Arnold

Saint-Gaudens was well-positioned to advise the Fair on sculpture. His own work was acclaimed, and he was familiar with the art worlds of both America and Europe, having long been involved in judging art exhibits and training young sculptors on both continents. Saint-Gaudens was responsible for selecting artists to create the huge sculptures depicting the themes of the Fair, which were placed in the center of the fairgrounds. He chose Mary Lawrence, a former student, to create the statue of Columbus; former assistant Frederick MacMonnies fashioned the Columbian Fountain; and Daniel Chester French was named to construct a 65-foot-tall figure of the Republic which would face MacMonnies' fountain across the Grand Basin.
